Blanding's turtles
My Master's thesis research explored headstarted Blanding’s turtles that are a part of an ongoing conservation project between Shiawassee National Wildlife Refuge and the Detroit Zoological Society. Blanding’s turtles are a species of special concern in Michigan and threaten and endangered throughout most of their range. My research looked at patterns in thermoregulation, movements, and land cover used by the headstarted Blanding's turtles. One and a half year old Blanding’s turtles were fitted with temperature data loggers and radio transmitters. Guiding a team of research assistants, we tracked these turtles for eighteen months recording their GPS locations and the corresponding data. Part of the analysis used a geographically weighted regression to find what habitat factors predicted the distances moved from the release points.
