Wildlife Responses to Silvicultural Approaches in Northern Hardwood Forests of Michigan:

This research involves silivicultural techniques not commonly used in the northern hardwood forests of Michigan. I am evaluating wildlife responses to these alternative silvicultural approaches while working closely with Michigan State University's' (MSU) Department of Forestry and the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (MDNR).  These alternative techniques include seed tree and shelterwood cutting. My project objectives are to quantify how deer respond to the silvicultural treatments including physical barriers to herbivory and to quantify how the silvicultural treatments affect other key wildlife species in the greater forested landscape.
